Workers Right or what is often called labor rights are group of rights between the employer and employee that pertains to labor relations as well as human rights. Generally these rights have in relation to the employees’ wages, salaries, benefit negotiations and safety. The most common composition of these rights is the “right to unionize.”
Most often employees form a Union to get a collective bargaining agreement from their employer to ensure increase of wages for its members and/or to improve their working condition.
The United Nations Declaration of Human Rights had two articles (Article 23 and 24) that incorporated the labor’s right.
Here’s a list of the most common labor rights issues:
- Limiting of work hours; In the 19th century an eight-hour day was campaigned and until today it still implemented in most countries and any excess time should be compensated with an overtime pay.
- Combating child labor; Exploits of child’s innocence thorough labor limits his education and damages his mind.
- Workplace condition; An establish worker’s standard has been set-up to protect employees from any hazardous effect while on the performance of his job.
- Minimum Wage; To protect the unskilled and entry level workers a minimum wage is set-up to avoid abused from employers who exploits this market.
- Right to Equal Treatment; Regardless of gender, religion, origin, sexual orientation and appearance each employee should have equal rights given and provided to everyone.
Although many laws had been set by the government and organization still, there are some companies who violate their workers right. Also, there has been much debate on discrimination in the workplace that we are all aware of that limits the growth of one employee as oppose to another. These often result to legal disputes.
